Here s some info about speedo workings and repairs and what you may expect to find..... from the UK site.........with a nice pic and explanation of the odometer and needle operation.
Rather than pull the drive unit apart .connect a variable speed battery drill to the cable to drive the speedo and see where the problem lies from there........

Hey Phil its a pain in the A isnt it ,rather than go through the waste of money trying to get it fixed I just live with it but for trips and double demerit weekends I put the navman on for a reliable speed indicator. Bryans pushy speedo looks to be a neater solution .
If you do crack the code and get the speedo to sit nice and stable make sure you let us know

hi mate,, the pin is actually called a roll pin, to get it out you'll need a pin punch a touch smaller than the hole, and pin itself, they can take some convincing to come out, so be ready for that, when putting it back in, {if you get it out} maybe use a type of anti sieze or copper coat for future jobs

Errol, the speedo cable is in great shape with no frade bits at all and no matter how tight I bent the cable it showed no resistance at all. On the speedo drive unit there is a pin (spring pin) that I could not budge at all and this prevented me from totally dismantling the unit. Maybe that's where the problem is, does anyone know how to remove this tiny spring pin?

Mate,
After having my stock gauges repaired several times, at great expense, I used one of these bicycle
speedos with great success....

Then when the tacho gave up I went to this Acewell unit..

The bicycle one is unobtrusive if you wish to retain the stock look, easy to fit and very accurate..

Sorry, mate. The only thing that I've seen make the needle wobble was when the cable was about to give up. Haven't heard of any internal bits in the speedo play up causing what you describe. Did the cable look ok when you lubed it up??

Hey guys, has anyone got any ideas how to fix an annoying and as it turned out, an expensive problem with the speedo needle jumping all over the place. I was done for speeding on Easter Saturday (Double demerits and all) 72k's in a 60 zone by a fixed camera  >:( I think I would rather fix the problem once and for all, so any hints would be greatly appreciated. I have already cleaned and re-packed with fresh grease, the speedo drive unit at the axle.I have also lubricated the speedo cable with chain lube and it spins very freely, I am at wits end as to what I can do next to try and overcome this bloody problem.
