could be 13mm  - couldnt really get accurate measure without removing from gear and then the numbers would have been visible I reckon - but I would prob have damaged bearing doing it.... :-[

Bryan, is it definitely 12mm?
I had a quick look and Both SKF & FAG both do a 110 X 70 X 13mm. Designation No: 16014, for both manufacturers.

Hey Bryan,
might be more valuable info than you think. My line of work gives me access to a database of tens of thousands of bearings including numbers of balls  etc which can vary between different manufacturers for the same bearing designation. Working away ot the mo but will definitely look those details up and see if theres a match when I get back

Oh yeah your efforts to strip down and research are appreciated

Jonesy, maaate.....I disassembled that diff... bur the numbers on the big bearing weren't visible -
I did however measure it up if that helps....
OD  110mm
ID     70mm
thickness  12mm
15 ball bearings
not enough to order a new one I reckon

the needle roller bearing

Jonesy, thats what I thought about the grease...... I did moisten the inner with diff oil....
I will disassemble my spare diff and get numbers for you....I always use my local bearing supplies for seals, bearings etc too....

Bryan you should only need to lightly grease the inner diameter of the seal to lubricate it against the surface that will be rotating/rubbung against it. I dont see the point of lubticating the static part of the seal...maybe only to aide assembly otherwise no need.

Rubber grease aint gunna stop that seal turning in the housing, if it does turn you got other problems

By the way is it still apart? would be good for later reference if you could get a number off that deep groove ball bearing. Should be something like 6311 (the last 2 digits are only examples) there could also be some letters as well.

Much cheaper to go to your local bearing supplier than yammie parts.

thx Xtian....
I pushed the oil seal into the housing dry (without rubber grease) - Steptoe suggested that I should have used RG and my No. 2 son (Mechanic) tells me I should take it out and re-install same using rubber grease  for fear of the seal turning in the housing and failing....
talk about a negative joy factor......I felt that it was all too easy..... >:(

Use high pressure grease instead of moly

ok then......new oil seal and O ring.....
this is a spare diff I stripped down to examine...

this is the new seal in my diff

less than $20 for the parts and a pretty easy job - even for me...
I must say tho that I think the mess on the wheel is from over-greasing the splines on the wheel/diff using moly grease.....time will tell
 ;D
BTW - Jonesy....the diff was painted in 2001 using the POR manifold paint in "aluminium"and its holding up pretty dam well...

Looks a bit scary, Bryan. That's a LOT of oil lost from the drive in that distance travelled.  Have a look at the breather first. If that's blocked, it'd cause the diff to pressurise when hot and force the oil out past the seals.

hi bryan,

if ur talking about the seal that sits behind the pinion nut?
u want to center punch the nut and shaft prior to removing the nut,
once the nut is off, remove the washer pop the seal out and replace.
when u put it back together torque the nut up so its in the same place as it was before removal.

Is yours leaking?
Do you need a shaft manual?
