Hi Peter,

I've tried doing the WD thing several times and just trying bit by bit to get the idle mixture screws out further each time, like I say 2 still won't come out, but the 2 that won't come out I can still get more than 3 turns out on them so that should be O.K. I hope? I'll assume there are ment to be some cap covers on them as they were full of grime when I first took them apart.

I have an 85 FJ1100 sitting out the back that I'm not sure what I'm going to do with and the carbies seem nearly the same with a different choke system and I notice there is a cap cover on 1 of the idle mixture screws.
I'm just outside of Queanbeyan these days.

Cheers
Lou

lou, if there the stock carbies, try shifting the clip
to the second postion, that alone might fix ur problem,
with regards to the off idle ports, lightly seat the mixture screws,
remove the float bowls, open the butterflys, ( i usually just put a \spark plug
to hold them open), now with ur finger over the pilot jet tower squirt some
\carb cleaner in the back of the carb bell where the air jet is located,  theres
no where for the carb cleaner to go except to the little holes in the off idle ports,
ull see if any are blocked or not.

with the mixture screws if there tight to unscrew, squirt some wd in the mixture screw towers
then work the screw the way u would use a tap or die, unscrew a quarter turn at a time, then tighten the screw a quarter of a turn keep working the screw and spray wd,

ive found the mix screws to be around 2 - 2 half turns out.

lou, where abouts are u living these days?

A good tune (colourtune) and new plug leads helped but not totally got rid of the low down stutter on mine, but I've also got a 4-1 exhaust that I want to be rid of one day.

Any breaks in the pick up coil wires?

Jonsey, I'll checkout the coils, when I got back from the ride I took the plugs out, they looked like they were straight out of the packet, no colour in them what so ever!

Cheers

Hey Peter,

The clips were set in the middle, the idle ports that you mention I only noticed last time I had the carbies off as they are sort of hidden by the butterfly, and I must admit there was quite alot of black soot, not carbon but heat type soot, I did use the air gun on them. Where are they fed from?
I set the idle mixture screws 2 turns out from seated I can't get 2 of the idle mixture screws out as they get so tight they feel like they'll snap and the bike will only idle for a little while and then stall. Any tips on carbie balancing I figure that will also help sort out a bit more?

Cheers

hey lou,

do u remember where ur slide needle is sitting?
with our bikes (rh) the clip in the 2nd position from the top works best.

the off idle ports, (the three little holes near the butterfly) make sure
none of those holes are blocked.

chech ur valve gaps

also float levels set at stock?.

theres a cpl of things to look for.

Hey Jonsey,
Good suggestion but I'd had the carbies off on 4 occasions and all the time they were clean.
When I had them off if you turned on the fuel tap on the connector towards the rear of the tap would let fuel flow, this is what I hooked up the fuel line that ran into the Carbies to as I has added fuel filters and the other hoses to the octy diaphram thingy, so they were arse about face and that is why they kept leaking, did just over 500K's on the rally and the bike ran fine except for the low down stutter (any advise on that?) but once you were past 3,500 RPM man the thing sang.

Great rally BTW 189 bikes on Saturday ranging from 1909 throught to modern, highly recommend the Goulburn Club puts on a great do.

Maybe too late to help, but any solids in the bowls? First thought was you might have disturbed years of sediment build up when you got to working on the fuel taps and this prevented the float level valve(s) from seating properly, just a thought.

As Goulburn has the oldest motorcycle club in Australia, every year they put on a great rally, I've missed out the last couple as they clash with the BMW Geehi rally which Ive help organise the last couple of years. Last Sunday I took the RH for a run with the Vintage club to know that the bike would be ready for this weekend after and oil change, new Rubber inlet boots, carby seat O rings and new fuel tap rubbers and O ring. Comming home the bike started to run very poorly, when I got home switched on the telly to watch the MotoGP2 went out after the race and the garage floor had fuel everywhere, I pulled off the rubber boot to airbox and No 2 carby was leaking, ordered a needle and seat from local dealer, pulled off the carbies and cleaned them out till one o'clock this morning, took the bike to work today and all started O.K. on the way home picked up new needle and seat and the bike hit low fuel and started running like a dog, about an hour after I got home, fuel on garage floor carby No 4 and by the look of it possibly in the engine as the sight glass is over the top, I can't figurge out the leak as I used a tube to blow thorough and couldn't get the seat to leak. I'm posting this and going out to give the carbies one more go, I'll come back and check to see if anyone has some advise for me. I'm getting frustrated and the 1977 Bemer is starting to look like it will make the trip instead>:( :'(
