Thanks Fred for the info, and also eveready. I haven't pulled the piece apart yet but the speedo stopped suddenly when having a bit of a play. The speedo itself and the cable are fine so I think that just leaves me with the drive unit.

I don't really need a loan one thanks eveready. Still riding so all is good!

Regards,

Tony  :D

Hey Guys,

what breaks is the two little tabs inside the unit which act as the drive.
It will still work (erratically) if only one tab brakes off.

When mine broke earlier this year I got one off "Fungus" for $10 and I know that he still had at least one more spare. Give him a call.

Other than that this is some of the other models that run the same unit:
SR500F
RD400E
XS650E
XS650SE - 114241
XS650SF
XS650SG
XS500D
XS500E
XS500C
XS750D
XS750-2D
XS750F
TX750
TX750A

Good luck

Just a Q, mate. What is wrong with the old drive? Just asking as that's not usually something that fails in normal service, or had it been running dry and flogged out the gears?
Just another Q. Would you like a loan of a drive till you can source one? I've got one here that's a good'n for a standard, and I understand my neighbour might be dropping by to see you soon.

Thanks so much for the info guys. This is great group.

Good point eveready. If anyone has one of the drives they would like to sell, let me know as I would rather pay you guys than just getting it overseas.

Hi Tony. There are two types of speedo drive. There is one type which has a threaded spigot that the cable screws onto with the usual knurled type nut arragement, which is fitted to the standards, which you have, and the other which has a smooth spigot, as fitted to Specials and RH's, the cable end having a reduced sleeve and a small bracket that bolts to the far side of the drive housing. I'll try to hunt up some pics for you, but the one you are after will have a threaded bit for the cable to screw to.

Sorry, only got links

Standard - CLICK
Cable - CLICK

Special / RH - CLICK
Cable - CLICK
Notice that this one has a large extra lump on the bottom leading edge. That is the boss for the locating bolt for the bracket that comes off the cable.
Also, these have a narrower cable exit angle to help clear the fork slider body which is behind the axle.
Just a note, mate. Before jumping on the Bay to get one, probably from the states, and pay a huge shipping cost ($36, one of them is) ask around on here. I'm sure someone would have a spare one that they could let go of for a much cheaper price than that.

G,day Tony
I believe they are the same and can also be found on other yamaha models around that era. My 81 XJ 650 shared the same drive and cable used across the XS 1100  range and the round faced speedo also found on the RH's.
I think you'll be pretty safe to go ahead and get ione.

Does anyone know if there are differences in the speedo drive units between models? I need to get one for a xs1100 80. There are heaps on ebay but I'm not sure if there are differences in the different models, countries and with the specials? Thanks :)
