the basics to start with coop,, pull the buckets out, check their condition, the "square" section o-rings are more than likely your culprit,,

but,, pull em apart clean em up,, and have a close look,,

you'l find there will be a lot of oxidized gunk around seal edges of the calliper body,, I normally carefully scrape it off with a fine  sharp edge,,small screw driver

as far as cleaning the buckets,, a light rub with steel wool, or scourer pad with a bit of brake fluid for lubing,, ONLY were the electrolosis is attacking them

if your going to do 1,, you might as well do all 3, that way you know there is no "weak" link in braking system,, sure as eggs, you do one, the others will start to leak from the added pressure

over the years I 've pulled mine down, cleaned them up, given the o-rings a bit of a roll in your fingers to disturb the faces, and clean the small bits of "stuff" off them and re-assembled, has worked for me so far,, just be carefull of the fibre o-ring beside the rubber one, don't give it a to harder time

OF COURSE THE ONLY FLUID TO USE WHEN CLEANING BRAKING SYSTEMS IS BRAKE FLUID
DO NOT USE FUEL OF ANY SORT OR WATER
would imagine brake kits are still around,, at what cost is any one's guess

i  brought this up on the .com site a little while ago,  its not correct,
as long as the system is stripped down then hot water is the best way
to clean it, then dry thoroughly, when reassembling use either brake fluid
or rubber grease on the seals and piston bores.

yep, thats y i use hot water it evaporates faster, also if ur using
brake fluid ur running the risk of stripping paint off calipers and
m/c but ur right in not using mineral cleaners they will swell the rubbers
and ruin them.

I have always used HOT water as the last clean and follow with leaving parts in the sun to dry
off/out completely

Hi Cooper, any chance of a photo to verify which ones you've got on there?
Here's what the 3 options could be.

#2 Standard Calipers

#3 Special Calipers

You did say they were RH Forks but it'd be prudent to be certain before trying to give technical advice as some Standard forks and all the Specials were air assisted as well

Thanks everready they are standard I went back to workshop and separated brake cylinders eventually.   I will tackle rear brake another night it appeared the slight weep was from the copper washer area where brake hose connects glad Ive stripped them back as they were in a bad state.

I guess that's good news, in a way. You shouldn't need to get kits for them if they weren't leaking internally. Just give them the cleaning of their lives, particularly the recess on the piston where the seal fits, following the advice previously posted by Geoff, Peter and Bryan and you should be right as rain. You could even just anneal the copper washers and reuse them if you like.

Are you jerking my chain, Geoff?? You're the one who told me about the fella that makes the copper head gaskets which are reusable after you heat them up?? Samo with the little round copper washers if you wanna save a cupla dollars.

well you coulda just said heat em up  ::) ;D ;D ;D

Except that to anneal somehting you have to make sure you heat it up beyond the phase transition temperature of the alloy in question...
