As 90,000km looms on the odometer, with most of it spent hauling a chair I suspect, my XS is acting more and more like an automatic :(
I have just searched for threads on clutch replacements, but while it is clear a few have done them, there is nothing that answers these questions:
- Should I go stock or aftermarket?
- If aftermarket, are any particular brands recommended / not recommended?
- Where to buy?
Obviously I could (and have) searched the web, but I'm wondering if there is a local source.
- Is the RH clutch different to other XS models, or can I just buy any XS11 clutch kit?
(Important if buying from OS)
- Any mods or other jobs I should do while I have the clutch housing open and plates out?

Good guide here:

Cross ref the part numbers for O'Seas models here:

just a ??
you have been adjusting the clutch inside the cover plate as well as the end of the cable
the small screw and lock nut??
-
Geoff - yes mate, all adjusted correctly at both ends with nice smooth action, good progressive take up & feel, etc...noticeably less 'bite' just lately though.
The real problem is that when I wind out to WOT on a dry road with good surface, the clutch breaks loose somewhere around 5-6000RPM.
(On a wet road or poor surface, the back tyre still spins up before the clutch)

Just another silly question:
You haven't started using a new oil or the manufacturers haven't added some slippy stuff to a new formula.
-
I have (from Valvoline XLD or Castrol to Shell Helix) but it is the same grade and viscosity as I've always used (basic, bottom shelf, SG, 20w-50 mineral oil) and I really don't think that is it.
I should have been clearer that this isn't a new or sudden problem, it has been steadily approaching since I bought this outfit some years ago. Let's just say I'm certain that when I pull the clutch plates out I will find they (and the springs) are all at or below the service limit.
-
Mate have you tried using or are you using heavy duty springs ?
A very quick fix to getting a bit more power into the springs is to shim them up with a washer under them. A really good fit for size and thickness is the washer off a used spark plug. 8)
We'll call it recycling to save the environment :-*

It may be a bit late (i haven't been on the site for a while & just read this thread) but I replaced the friction plates & springs on my RH early this year. $255 for the friction plates, springs & gasket. I bought all this from a local Yamaha dealer in Melb. Mine was slipping around the 4 - 5000rpm range too before I put the new stuff in and it certainly fixed the slippage.
And you should be very cautious about using an engine oil designed for a car engine. Most car engine oils have friction modifiers in them that will destroy your wet clutch.
