Title: Wiring probs may still be "Looming!"
Post by: excess.11 on February 17, 2011, 08:10:21 AM
Thought i d start a new thread in response to Brian s probs..but also to act as information for all our bikes electrical wiring be they differences , problems , fixes or otherwise.
Regarding your probs Brian.......a couple of quick thoughts came up with the question.......are your probs still fixed? The main loom in general has an insulated sleeve over a "Female " bullet connector. The "Male " bulllet would have come from the indicator itself..............therefore being a dead wire to negative ......ie...... the headlight shell. On the suject of blown fuses , as a result of this....the indicator is on  a seperate fuse to the ignition.Soooo........if this shorted the indicator fuse i would think the ignition circuit would still function. When i look at my xs1100e fuse block ..from left to right.the fuse assignment is..........1)Main(30a)....2)Head(10a)...                    3)Turn(20a).......4)Ign(10a)  .Some wiring may be astray if the ignition and indicators are on the same fuse..........and this may be your problem ,too much load on the one fuse.As i said ......just a few thoughts.........and as i m expecting.......i think i just opened up "a whole can of whoop ass!!!

My bike is very original and when I got it no-one had ever laid a spanner or screwdriver on it. Not a single chewed up screw head or bolt. The loom is the same - never been touched.

I have since replaced the old fuse box, but that has been all untill i bypassed the killswitch thinking that would solve my problems.  :'( :'(

I also fitted the new horns, but that didn't involve hacking into the loom in any way.

I'll have to dig out a wiring diagram to see what was going on.

If you think there's anything I can test let me know.

To see if the problem with the indicator shorting to the head light is associated with the start/running probs.....pull the fuse for the indicators (20a) and see if the bike will still start. The ignition should be on a (10a) fuse on its own circuit.

This wiring diag shows the fuse block assignment and arrangement in the top right corner. You can see where i m coming from re ...they are seperate fuses and on seperate circuits.

One thing i noticed....the horns are on the same fuse as the indicators.

I looked at something similar earlier and it shows the same thing. I'm going to go out to the shed after dinner and investigate.

Was the bullet connector........ touching the headlight......... male or female.........and was it coming from the main loom or the indicator ?

Male and it was coming from the indicator. It went to a 4 way that had 2 wires going into it including the one that caused the problem.

I didn't do it. Shappers on the UK site did it.

He own the nicest non-standard XS in the world IMO. Close to standard Sport (RH), but with wire wheels and a full BSM 4-2 exhaust, fuel injection, blue spot calipers etc.

+1 on shapps bike,
its one of the most beautiful xs's ive seen,
the way yamaha should have built it.
and those spoke wheels.... :P

I too am a massive fan of the spoke wheels ..... love your work Shaps
 ;D ;D ;D
I have recently chased down a lost tail light through the loom and
the result led me to separate and clean all plugs, and connections
that i could easily do ....
12 volt system apparently needs no "dry joints" so my auto leccie mate tells me
all is well with my electrics now

This was the main reason for my harness change on my Special. Too many bullet connectors squeezed into the headlight shell for my liking.

I was horrified when I found this mess compared to how neat and tidy the rest of the bike was.
Hopefully, you're not dealing with a rats nest like this Brian.
