sick of spending money on oil, and riding with
a smoke sceen behind me,
i just bought these rings off ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110640508115#ht_1282wt_935
was also wondering if any1 had a honing tool i could borrow to hone the cylinders.
-
Sure Pete. PM me your address and I'll send it off to you unless someone just round the corner from you has one
-
Aside from honing the bore to fit these .25 oversize rings..........did you carry out a rebore and are they standard boresize.....( aside from wear and tear) to start with?
Saw this post and it had me wondering..........

thanx eveready, ill leave for the moment as i havent got the rings yet,
if i cant get hold of one, ill definately let you know. thanx for the offer.
excess.11, these are going in my spare motor thats in the bike atm,
im doing this one on the cheap, a cpl of the boys on the uk and us sites
have done this with the oversize rings with out any problems so far, i think .25 i should be sweet
if i do the end gaps correctly. it definatley wont be like using new pistons and having the cylinders
bored to suit but fingers crossed it should get me out of trouble3.
-
Sure, Pete. No worries about the cylinder hone. Just give us a yell if need be.
About the rings, I don't see an issue using them if you gap them properly.
That'll probably be the way I'll go when the time comes to do mine.
What sort of mileage is on the motor?
-
the motor in it atm has at least 140k's,
probably not he best solution, but hopefully will
do the job.
ive got a big bore kit thats been sitting here for the past cpl
of years, but i want to put that in the original motor along with new
con rod and crankshaft bearings, but moneys tight atm so hopefully
one day ill get that all put together.
-
got stuck into the head yesterday,
i used the soda blaster to clean the exhaust ports,
with the valves still fitted, cleaned them up nicely.
new valve stem seals had been fitted a little while ago, so there sweet,
poured petrol into each port with no leakage or seepage,
adjusted the valve shims, what a prick of a job even with the head
off the engine, according to the manual for best performance
the valves should be adj to the lower specs so
i set up the intakes to be all exactly 4 thou and the exhaust
all exactly 8 thou, this meant some grinding of a few shims,
i did this buy using an old shim bucket to hold the shim before grinding,
the valve shims i got of melb came in very handy, thanx again brian.
its also very important to torque all the cam bolts to spec 7.5 foot lbs
each time the cam has been removed, (i wasnt doing this at first)
as overtighting the nuts (even by a quarter of a turn) meant
the valve clearance would close up.
cant take any pics atm as my internet connection has been restricted.
-
cleaned up the pistons today,
got rid of all the carbon,
used an old ring to clean the carbon from the ring grooves,
used a guitar wire to clean the oil holes out, a few of them were blocked
with carbon.
used oven cleaner for the inside of the pistons, that worked quite well,
left it on for around 10 minutes and did it twice, that stuff is pretty toxic
so didnt want to leave it on to long.
also polished and buffed them up,
these pistons and the jugs are off my original engine which had over 150,000 k's
on it and cleaned up really well,
the only problem i came across was the gudgion pin was a bit to loose in 1 of the pistons for my liking, this piston was attached to the con rod that seized on the original engine.
so ill have to use a piston and pin from the engine i have mounted in the bike atm.
also used oven cleaner to clean up the oil rails, they came up a treat also,
ive bought the over size piston rings so will be using the oil rings but using the old
oil rails with them
hopefully il be able to get hold of a honing stone shortly,
and get stuck into the jugs,
so all good so far.
-
rings came in the post and look pretty sweet,
i should have the honing tool on monday,
so its all starting to come together. ;D
-
honed the cylinders today
and gapped the over size rings
came out pretty good.
heres a few pics.

wow didnt realize how long ago i started
doing this,
well ive started the strip down,
nearly all apart, just having a few hassles with
the barrells there about 3/4 off, left it for now
and ill get back into tomorow.
ill keep u updated.
-
I thought grinding the shims was a no-no as they are case hardened ???????
-
hi wiz,
i think the shims are hardened, i put the side
of the grinded shim into the bucket so theres
no wear going on, he hard part to he grinding
is keeping the skimmed area flat and even.
-
Hey Pete,
How'd you do the grinding? on a sheet of glass with paste or wet n dry
Is this the head and barrels that was spread across your pool table when I called in all those months ago?
-
I've done the grind-the-shims thing, did about 4 or 5 and never again. Started off with coarse sandpaper on a flat surface and a billion hours later the thickness had only dropped about the width of a piece of tinfoil with ten times that to go. Ended up using blue-tack on a stick to hold the shim against a benchgrinder and after a million measurements with micrometer, finished it off with the sandpaper.
pretty much impossible to get perfect equalness across the whole shim but can get close enough. PITA compared to buying a few new shims
-
lol yep jonesy the head and barrels from the pool table.
i did the shims the same way as pg did, but i held
the shim in one of the buckets from the head which made
it easier to hold, i wouldnt do it again either,
i was being pretty anal in that i wanted the gaps
all exactly the same, each step of a shim (.5) is a whisker
under 2 thou, i was trying to remove a thou.
well i replaced the pistons, got the barrells back on,
at the same time i replaced the cam chain, when putting the cams
back on the fucker doesnt
fit,its to tight, its seems its about a link and a bit short,
so im up for another chain.
-
this is the chain i goy off ebay
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/YAMAHA-XS1100-XJ1100-CAM-CHAIN-/360397037627?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item53e956603b
he seems pretty good according to the .com site,
im sending him a msg but i bought it ages ago
so i doubt anything will come from it
-
Pete, I hope you didn't get to the point of threading it through your motor, and finding out it's too short. I found out, the hard way that Star Yamaha, on Brissie's northside, got it wrong 2 times! Boy. Was I pissed off?. I dropped the chain into the cases once, but managed to fish it out with a magnetic pickup thingie, but I'd rather think of happier times.
Georgefix is normally a really clued up seller of all things XS, so I hope you'll get things sorted out with him quickly.
-
hey ev, thats exactly what ive done, i replaced the chain
when i had the barrels off, and went to put the chain around the 2nd
cog and the bugger wouldnt fit, so im going to have to cut this new one
and put another 1 on.
i sent the guy a msg with a short reply, ""its the right 1.
well if it was it would fit.
-
all good,
the chain is the correct 1,
was the dumbass mechanic that was doing it wrong. ;D
i pulled the sump off, and found a broken bit of bakerlite,
looks like its part of the hi vo chain guide,
probably explains the knock im getting at idle,
ill put it all back and see how it goes.
-
was the dumbass mechanic that was doing it wrong.
Explain, please???
Was it something to do with the tensioner?
-
lmao, i knew u'd ask. ;D
i tried putting the chain over the cogs b4 i screwed down
the cams, its not like i havent done it b4,
ive had a cpl of things on my mind which didnt help,
she's all abck together,
im about to go fire her up and take her out to run it in........
hopefully :D
-
well after a shitty week,
the bikes all done, had a small exhaust leak
which has been fixed, the knocking i had at idle is gone too,
have done the run in, the bikes kicking arse and pulling
really hard, its one of those things i shouldve done much earlier.
-
Good to hear it's all come together for you, mate. I think that camchain thing is what is termed "a blonde moment" and we all have one of them from time to time. I'll bet you're rapt with the way the bike runs now, eh? She'll be good for another 20 years.
-
lol yep ev something like that,
but im wrapped atm, ill ride it 4 a bit then recheck
valve clearances and retorque head bolts, the engine
is realy quiet compared to how it was.
ev, hows urs going, i saw on the .com site uve changed wheels
and lightened the bike up. i didnt think there was much difference
between the 17 and 16 in rims?
-
Pete, mine's going like a train! Combine the slightly lower gearing and losing about 30 kgs and you get the effect of adding probably 10-15 hp to it! It's great. I haven't taken the big fairing off yet as there's been lots of weather up this way lately, but it'll be coming off sooner, rather than later. Only taken it for one trip to work so far, and with the new tyre on, took it rather steadily, but at 120kph, it's gained about 400 rpm at that speed. It is much quicker off the mark, too.
I researched some tyre sizing scales on the bridgestone site, and according to them, a Spitfire tyre at 130/90-16 , 130/90-17 and 130/90-18 only have a 3 percent difference in rolling circumference between each size. I thought it would be more, but those are the figures they gave me.
My bike rolled over its 300,000th kilometer this week, so I'm going to give her a run out to Paradise Dam to celebrate and take a few pics of the occasion. Hopefully, I can lure Steptoe out for the ride as it's the best stretch of road in these parts.
-
great stuff,
i noticed when i had my gear rack and the larger standard tank
on the bike made it that much heavier, so i took the rack off
and put the special tank back on and ill keep the standard tank for longer
trips.
ur lucky tho with the 16 in rim that theres more choices available
for tyres.
and happy 300,000k ;D
-
I weighed it once on the fruit scales at Golden circle when it had ALL the gear on it. Big tank, intercom system, UHF & AM CB's, footboards for pillion, plus all what was on there recently, with about 1/3 tank of fuel - 326kgs! I'm only 68kgs though so that'd make it go better, eh?
