hey guys,
is anyone running an oil temperature gauge on a '78 XS1100E?
Saw one on eBay from Germany last year. It screwed in as a replacement for the filler cap but you had to be a contortionist to see it on the run and it cost a packet in Duetchmarks.
I know overheating isn't a problem because I've got the oil cooler model but it's just nice to have a visual readout of the important stuff that's going on inside the heart of the beast. Especially at 323,000klm.
Also, I like gadgets!

I've got one. Just a small stub that reads the splashes and conduction from the case.
Really just a bit of bling but fun to have.

I take it that it screws in to replace the oil filler plug?
Did you buy it local and if so, where mate?
I've decided I'm not going down the road of drilling and tapping a sensor into the sump and then trying to hide the wires up to a gauge on the bars.
Had an early Shovelhead which had an aftermarket oil pressure gauge on a long chrome stem from the pump up to just under and slightly out from the tank. Easy to read on the run and looked good too.
I suppose if it was easy we'd all have one wouldn't we. I'll keep looking.

Got it while I was in Germany at the 30th Anniversary rally, it just takes the place of the oil filler cap.
The bikes can run all day and night without getting too hot so it was gotten just as a piece of bling...not really needed.

Mate, you got some serious Bling Gadgets :o there. I've always liked the look from behind the screen on a Dresser (especially during the Darwin monsoon season) but prefer the naked look when off the bike.
Thats the sort of solution I'm looking for: sensor in the drain plug hole, small enough gauge to be mounted somewhere around the triple tree area. There must be some stuffed faired models broken up on ebay. I'll have a look around.
I know I run cool enough because I've toured 2-up through the centre in summer several times without any issue on the XS, unlike my FLH Shovel where I had to slow down to 80k/hr to keep the temp under 220 deg.
Look forward to catching up for a few cold ones soon. You know the kind of arvo: In the shed, beer in hand, leaning on the bike, lying about how fast they go and how many ponies live under the tank ;D.
