sync gauges and stuff are handy but there's lots and lots of bollock statements about carb syncing, specially on the(wait for it) xs11.com yank site, (haha) like your bike will run like crap if you don't happen to use the "special" gadgets, and so many know-alls will have you think that there's no way to balance carbs without "special" gadgets,
mmwwahaha load of clueless B.S. you can balance four carbs dead-accurate by eye and ear EASY .. btw carb balance is only of medium importance, it's just an idle thing only, once you hit the throttle it all means jack...
meanwhile the "experts" will gape with indignation and still insist your bike will be running "out of tune" at 2/3rds throttle at 100mph in 4th gear because one butterfly might be 1.35 microns different than the other three ... hohoho

Yer well all well and good but pgnz I would like to see you try and do the mixture on a set of the new XJR1300 carbs without something like the right angle screw driver I just bought.
And there is nothing special about the carbtune, it is just a lot less messy and easier to store.
I guess just having good tools makes life a bit easier for us old blokes who just want to get the job done and get on the road.
Carbtune is a UK based mob by the way not US

I am happy to listen to all advice but this sounds a bit like saying you can screw a screw without a screw driver. Yes for sure but the screwdriver does a fine job so why try to do without it?
-
well said Brett, good analogy
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Just for the record.......I don t use a "Screwdriver"........when I ... :o ??? ;)......nuff said ;D
-
What do you use then ::)
A hammer :P

cramped-access to mixture screws .. a cut-stubby screwdriver..
not saying gauges and stuff are no use, they're handy-as, but they're not "compulsory" like some "experts" will have ya think ...
ps the prodding of mix screws whilst "balancing" the carbs at the same time .. who's idea is that .. hoho, just set the mix screws first for a nice rich idle , not bloody lean - then leave em' alone for the next 30 years..
for balance sit the throttle plates and fuel holes exact by eye (with a magnifying glass) - regardless of all the yankee hot air about "each cylinder's vaccuum is individual and different" and "PROPER SYNCHRONIZATION can ONLY BE ACHIEVED WITH THE PROPER SPECIAL TOOLS" blah blah blah blah,
real world simple just sit the throttle plates all even and she's done Jose...

Won't fit simple as that.
Screws are right up near cylinders up under the carbs and by the way some cylinders seem to run a bit hot when the motor is going :-), might get some burned knuckles.
Get some and take a look.
If you don't think a bike runs better when it is tuned properly then you don't do many ks or have to sit idling in lines of traffic jams.
Why bother having any adjustments at all just set it at the factory and forget it
Hmmmm makes me wonder
-
I can balance/synch my carbies without taking the carbs off when I use vac guages. The visual method needs the carbs off. Many ways to skin a cat

Get some and take a look. don't need some, have looked..
If you don't think a bike runs better when it is tuned properly then you don't do many ks or have to sit idling in lines of traffic jams. proper B.S. statement...
Why bother having any adjustments at all just set it at the factory and forget it. things actually wear
Hmmmm makes me wonder yeah ya look like a dreamer..

Gee you are tough, much better o do things the hard way just so you can say you have
Get some and take a look. don't need some, have looked..
Not well enough
If you don't think a bike runs better when it is tuned properly then you don't do many ks or have to sit idling in lines of traffic jams. proper B.S. statement...
Explain why

Yep always dreaming but that beats pointless criticising
Much better to join in and add to the knowledge that the forum is trying to get out there
Yep my dreaming go this whole thing started here, just a punt I may find some fellow XS1100 riders
Yep some dreams do come true

yep, everybody,s right,
yes you can set em by eye, and they run fine,
you can tune em by ear and a hose like the holley days, and they will get up and go
like Jonesy says, many ways to skin a cat,
but the way I look at it, your not going to put up with a substandard half arse job by a tradesman painting your house or putting in a driveway,
I did a colour tune on a fella,s bike up here a while back, {Z9}, tuned by a "reputable" shop, and was showing this, all we did was play with the air fuel mix screw, {moved them bugger all} when he came back from a quick run you could see the smile on his face 4 houses before he got back to mine
for the little extra it takes why not make it purr instead of idle
my 5 c :)
