Hi all,
After my problem of possible unfriendly matter in through the air intake, I am thinking of using a cleaner similar to 'seafoam'. Has anyone had experience with this or similar products? If so, how did you go about it?. I.E. through each individual intake tube or straight up through the air filter? (with filter removed of course)

if your talking about cleaning blocked jets etc, the most effective method (without ultrasonic cleaners and all that fancy stuff) is to strip the carbies and manually clean in petrol and blow out orifices with compressed air and use tip cleaners etc. Or am i missing the point?

This treatment cleans carbon and muck from the piston,valves and such in each cylinder. As discussed previously, I found some crap in the air filter housing that would have been sucked in through air intake. I'm just searching for a way to purge that if there is any residue. There are youtube clips of people using this product (seafoam) but I haven't seen one on a bike.

"seafoam" never used it so can't state "facts" about it - but sounds a lot like the usual yankee BS to me.. lol

Seems like a lot of stuffing around. Injector cleaner works just as well. You can put a whole bottle in because according to the directions you can't over treat your engine.
I put a full bottle into half a tank and ran it dry. Refilled and the thing has never idled better.
I had previously stripped and cleaned the carbys four times, adjusting and stuffing around etc.
Did the same for the six carbys on the CBX with the same result.
I put it down to the varnish like deposits that build from the bikes age and the amount of down time the carbys had.

Ok here's an attempt at clarity. My original problem was that when changing the air filter I found a whole lot of gunk in the air filter box. As stated in the thread I started called 'the thrill is gone, not yet' because I discovered this problem the day bb king died. (very cryptic, I know. I'll try to be more literal in future) It seems the PO couldn't get the air filter box to close so he/she/it put some sort or putty around the seal which dried, cracked and crumbled into the air filter housing. Meaning that, the stuff has been sucked into the air intake of the carbs and hence, into the ignition chambers aka cylinders. I don't think that would have impacted fuel jets but hey, I've been wrong before.
I have got hold of a product called 3bond engine conditioner that is used especially by Subaru for their boxer engine which gunks up due to laying on it's side. This stuff needs to go into the inlet manifold and is said to clean Pistons, valves et al in the combustion chamber. As I don't know what the putty like stuff was, I'm trying to clean this out, if possible.
I'll let you know how I go.

any bits of crumbly sealer gunk, in a nano-second it'd just go through the inlet valves, get blasted to vapor and spewed clean out the exhaust valves... who'd be worrying ?? 8)

For a one off event like pgnz describes i agree shouldnt be a problem but obviously long term running without filter you'll do damage

wouldn't bother throwing money at dodgy magic potions, just fix the effin airbox.. lol

the problem most likely with the airbox is it has more than likely out of shape where the filter seats,, easiest way to fix your airbox problem, grab some window gap sealing foam, not a very thick one, {use this as it will be less likely to break down} from bunnings or such and run around the bottom filter seat, normally the one out of shape, sit the filter on and see if the gap is taken up,
as for the sucking up of the crumbling, it won,t have had any effect on the motor at all
as for the knock take the top off and plugs out and turn it over, see what looks out of place if anythoing
