Ok, as I mentioned in the general disc'n, my bike had a fairing which had built in head and indicator lights. The importer put an after market headlight (not connected) and I've just gone and bought a pair of generic blinkers which will do for road worthy. So here goes with the Q's.
1. PO had a vinyl bag with press studs wrapped and cable tied to the vomit of coloured spaghetti at the head stem. This bag looks like it goes together holds the cabling and hangs off 2 small bolt inserts under Speedo and tacho. Does everyone have the dangling bag behind their headlight? Is this a left over from the fairing, or do the nakeds out there have this also?
2. On the head stem at the front is a block with 2 m6 (+/-) threads about 40mm apart. What is that for? Could it possibly be to hold a housing for cable loom which would be more waterproof and neater than the abovementioned dangling bag?

You bought a reasonably good bike for a reasonably good price......well done.
You are aware that you are the owner of a USA import model I hope. There are a variety of differences to the models that were released here in the day.
I would source one of the original headlight shells/bucket and light (not the sealed beam type).

Thanks Jeff. Yes I know it is an import. I have the headlight from the fairing which is the rectangle non sealed. I'll hang onto that, but maybe the light diffusion is biased to the wrong side of the road. (if it has it) I'll try loading pics the bag thingy is intriguing.
Any clues what should bolt onto very front of stem?

There is a cable tidy......basically a bracket with a wire hoop that the harness passes through.

Ok. So then does all the wire and connections live inside the headlight housing? Has to have a chance of staying dry.

Yes.....all connections reside in the headlight shell.
The bracket you are asking about is the "Stop" for the steering lock pin that ejects from the lower section of the ignition housing. Your bike model I believe does nt have this option......it s only on the Superior "Standard" model. ;D

The "Vinyl Bag" I m guessing is a left over from the fairing due to having to extend and weatherproof the existing loom connectors that were previously weatherproofed in the original headlight before it was removed .

I believe this bike to be a standard. It does have a functioning steering lock. I'm assuming those threaded holes are for the metal cable holder loop. Anyway, I've got the wiring down to just a couple of loose, I don't know where that goes, ends. So, is it true the headlight will only turn on when engine is running? I think I saw that in a thread somewhere. That'll make it hard to get the key in the garage door at night time. (yes I know, have separate key sets, but someone's gotta put the hahaha back into this yamaha!)

The headlight on when engine is running .......is one of those USA XS1100 traits. It can be disconnected if you like . There is a white wire from the alternator that switches the headlight relay from memory.
Cable holder attaches elsewhere lower on the headstem /frame area.

One simple fix could be to completely replace the current US wiring loom with an Aussie wiring loom.
Then your indicators won't stay on like the US model and all the wiring would be consistent with Aussie compliance.
A loom change will take you about an hour and is a relatively easy job. (Just done one on 3131)
All the bits you need will plug and play.
There is a blue wire in the headlight bucket for the indicators.......don't connect this as it will short out you wiring and require a replacement loom (just done one on 3131)
There are still very good condition wiring looms for 2H9 (78/79) to be had at Joe's Motorcycle Wreckers in Canberra. I found several at a cost of $75.

Hi David, and welcome to the family.
That wire cable loop thingy mouints at the front of the lower triple clamp and is sandwiched between the front brake line splitter and the clamp with the loop facing rearwards.

The loop is part #22 in the diagram and fits behind the splitter block #14 and a front plate # 23 holds the main harness cables in position.
The two holes in the headstem lock bracket don't have any function in any of the XS models in factory form. They do however make an excellent spot to mount one of these

As the factory BMW bracket bolts perfectly up to those holes.

Ok, makes sense that it was a fit for the fairing. Could be a good spot to mount a waterproof junction box in case I don't get all that wire into the headlight shell.

Mate, not sure there'd be room to mount any type of box off them as the speedo cable and all the wiring for the instruments has to move around in front of it as the steering pivots when turning.
Believe it or not, all the connectors and wiring will fit in the Standard headlight shell so you shouldn't need anything on the outside.
Last bit: the vinyl bag was used to encase the junction of where the main harness connected to the extension loom for the fairing wiring. It is not used on the unfaired bikes.

I ve never noticed any "to the shoulder of the road" light diffusion ...so the headlight should be ok.
