O.K. so I replaced the cracked headlight, when I put it all back together the RIGHT blinker wouldn't work, traced it to the switch, disassembled the switch and one wire had the solder gone on it, soldered all three of them again, should be O.K.
I now have another issue with the right blinker works but the LEFT one doesn't, pulled apart the block again, stretched out the little spring in the switch as I thought it wasn't making good connection put it together and here is what is happening. after about 15 repeated efforts.
Turn ignition on, switch left blinker on, I hear the click from the flasher unit but doesn't blink, I can also hear the click from the flasher when I push in for cancel, turn on right blinker then switch to left and it works, if I flick right then left straight away the left will work and stay working until I turn the key off or push in the cancel, then turn key off/on again and it fails, I have tried another flasher relay and same again, any ideas/thoughts ???

Lou.......is the motor running or just have the ignition on?
Indicators will sometimes struggle unless the engine is running.
Disassemble and try just bridging the switch contact plate with a screwdriver to check left and right............with the engine running.
It s a matter of isolating and breaking down to where the fault/s are.
It would nt hurt to replace all indicator globes and check internal connections...... if you have nt done that already.

is the motor running when you do the tests? motor vibration helps activate the relays....or it could be the extra charge with motor running.

tear out old clunky XS flasher & throw on a cheap digital flasher then the blinkers'll flash at the merest hint of voltage

Same thing happens running or not, I have replaced globe and flasher relay, I'll take the fairing off and double check the earth in the headlight, but I still find it strange that when I put on the left blinker after turning on the ignition, I can hear the flasher unit click and also when I cancel I hear it again.

Did you replace ALL globes with NEW store bought ones ? Are you using standard filament globes?
If you connect a multimeter into the bullet connectors just outside each of the four indicators......what voltage are you getting on each of them ?
Are all of your ground connectors at the reg/rec unit ok and have you cleaned the threads on the holding screws....also check all frame and battery ground straps for resistance and continuity.

On some models there are two wires coming out of the loom. One is the blinker wire the other is off the head/park light system for running lights. For the U.S. I HAVE MISTAKENLY THOUGHT IT WAS A NUETRAL OR EARTH. Use a test globe and earth it to the frame to determine which wire to use and earth through a black wire.

another thing to try is to rip out the self canselling unit, on a standard it lives under the LH side cover next to the battery. On another XS i once owned the self canseller was doing its thing after one blink so I was having to continually flick the button to resemble flashing indicator light. Once the self canseller is removed it just means you'll have to stop the blinking by pressing the button like a normal bike

You guys have beaten me to the next phase in finding this out, (cause I've been out in the shed trying to find this out while you guys are telling me what I'm about to say) one thing I forgot to mention was that I put a new ignition switch on the bike, so after ripping it all apart again, fairing/tank/seat and chasing connectivity, contact cleaning and tightening all connections, I end up at the blinker relay, going into the blinker relay there is a brown wire and a brown/white wire, there is also a Yellow/blue wire at the bottom that connects to a Yellow/green wire, when I disconnect this wire the left blinker works O.K. when I plug it back in it won't work although the whole time the right one works.
So all I can think of is that the Yellow/green wire must go to the self cancelling unit.
The Yellow/green wire also has a black wire together going back into the harness, if I plug the black wire into the Yellow/blue wire in the bottom of the relay, it goes nuts like it's having an electrical kaniption.
So on the Refuel Hourly model, where is the self cancelling Mother Fu&^%r module located, cause then I can rip it off the spare bike and say thanks you little Sh*t of a thing and totally eliminate it, regardless the blinkers are now working, but what a long winded process it's been.

Yellow /green goes from the flasher canister to the self cancelling unit. Black wires within the main loom are generally a neg or ground.As a general rule.....i would nt be connecting any colored wiring into a black wire unless you were sure about the connection and outcome.

I thought you said in an earlier post.....all was good now. What issue are you still having ?
Did you disassemble the indicator sw and bridge the contact block to bypass the toggle mechanism
Maybe post some pics of wiring at the canister / switch and relevant connections in the headlight shell for us to see. And re explain what issue you are having now.
You mentioned earlier you had a yellow blue wire.....there are t any i can see on the schematic......but there is a blue/yellow which goes from the reserve lighting unit to the handle bar sw.
