Title: 2014 Off Centre Run (OCR)
Post by: SCARFEY on July 18, 2014, 05:54:54 PM
I'm off on a little run next Saturday on my 1993 NX 650 Honda Dominator.

We cross a couple of deserts including the Tanami from Alice Springs to Halls Creek which involves 600 Km of dirt requiring us to carry additional water and fuel to make it successfully

Not sure which way I'll come back, probably across the Nullabor [or maybe the bus if the old single single banger gives up] after visiting my Brother in Mandurah.

That s the stuff dreams are made of Scarfey .......you get to tick one more off the "Bucket List". :P
Beware of those pesky Dingoes when camping out at night......might pay to take a "Decoy" baby....or...."Boi Boi " (according to Meryl Streep s attempt at the Aussie lingo) . :-\ :-[ ::)
I see part of the trip travels down to the Alice...........any chance you get to open her up on the now Unrestricted section of road north of Alice?
Many others going ? What variety of bikes are making the attempt ? What does the Missus say about it? ;)

Steptoe

The old Dommie is gasping at about 130- 140 especially with a load of camping gear and tucker etc for a month and nearly 40 litres of fuel. [24 in the tank 15 on the rack on the back]

Did a trial pack today. Bugger I have to leave the kitchen sink home, got everything else though.

Generally there are about 100 or more turn up. The last one I went on was near the Gulf of Carpentaria at a place called Lorella Springs. Bitch to get in to. The last 30 K was basically soft sand, I fell off about five times

The idea is that there has to be a fair bit of dirt to get there and the next trip [held every two years] is decided by the attendees at the current run.  The bloke who started it twenty years ago gets quite pissed if you call it a Rally it's the "OFF CENTRE RUN" [OCR]
Lots of BMW's turn up. There is a bloke from BMWTCNSW who has been to every one on a 75/5 Boxer.

Missus and I just spent six weeks on holiday together. She needs a break don't you think, while I'm away she can go over to the Governor Generals House and get her bravery award for 44 years of being married to George. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
.

Wot???...one lil bag on the rear ....how long is the trip expected to take?
I m thinkin you need at least 2 lil bags  ??? :-\.............there must be back up vehicles and cooks and allocated camp spots pre nominated if it s been running that long?
A few indigenous roadside stalls selling the odd witchety grub or bush tucker treats on a stick maybe?
Cant see that many people roasting a goanna over a campfire for tucker . ;D
But ....damn I wish I was goin..... :(

Hey George,
I'd say your front tyre will only be skimming the surface, and be the equivalent of a bike with power steering, otherwise it looks like you need a weigh bridge certificate and an upgraded licences, as that now looks like a heavy ridged ;D. 650 with 350 performance and 750 fuel economy ;)

Have fun, if you see Brad and Stuart McMillan there, tell them I said G'day?

Cheers

Lou

Well folks the plan almost came off. Rode to Parkes NSW and the old Honda broke down (Carby). Rode onto Cobar, almost. Bike broke down, ignition this time. Waited two days for parts then took off. Jus near Broken Hill ignition sensor shat itself, had a spare so I pulled the donk apart and fixed it. Took off to ride the bitumen to Alice Springs but when I got to Yunta SA I met a bloke riding around Australia so we hooked up and decided to go up the Oodnadatta track through Finke on the old Ghana railway trail to Alice. Fell off three times, broke down once. When we got to Alice my family had reported me missing to the cops so had to explain myself.
Left Alice and rode across the Tanamai. My mate started coughing up blood so we were referred to Kunnunurra by a local Doctor. Nothing much just a lung infection.
Headed for the Drysdale Station on the Gibb River road, fell off in the middle of the Pentecost River, Crocs didn't get me.
Spent a couple of days at Drysdale then headed off home. My mate left me and I continued on my own. 100 km south of Port Hedland the bike expired permanently. So I hitch hiked back to Hedland, bought a ute picked up the bike and continued on four wheels. Took four days to drive south with a severe case of diareah and had to admit myself to hospital to get some fluids pumped in. Stayed at my brothers for a week, went flying at Narrogin gliding club and set off to drive home. What a bloody great holiday

Hey George,
Just read your post, sounds like you had a nuts of a time, just need to clarify something, you took Sh!t loads of fuel, in my experiences Honda's only break down when they are out of fuel, (SORT OF) there are two many issues there for the NX650 in one trip ;D What stopped her in the end :( BTW do you have a cheap ute for sale? On a more serious note, it's good to see that your both all good?

Cheers

Lou

Lou the old Dommie is essentially under cooled using the frame full of oil as the oil cooler for what is largely an oil cooled engine.

It didn't break down on the dirt because we rode at about 80-90 KMH but when I got over 100 it overheated and blew the hall effect sensor in the engine.  I had a months worth of food, clothes, camping gear and a heap of tools etc on board so it was heavily loaded. Crossing the Tanami Desert means there is no fuel for 600 Km. (which we did in one day and couldn't believe we did ourselves)

Mostly I only filled one fuel can at a time until then because the bike has a 24 litre tank

I paid $6000 for the Ute it's a 2002 AU (3?) with an aluminium tray and the "Marlin" pack which means it has a six stacker and lower suspension and an XR6 engine, goes like stink and has only done 120,000 Km. It returned 7.8 litres/ 100 on the Nullabor. Goes on sale next week, cant afford three cars.

Anyway we had a Fekking ball there were no negatives all good stuff and part of the adventure.

See you at the Far Cairn Rally 19-21 September at Tottenham NSW???

Hi George,

Thought about the Far Cairn rally, but I'm going on a 2 day vinduro (Vintage Enduro) at Kookadinia near Holbrook taking the 73 XL350 and the 74 DT125 as backup, went to the one at Canowindra two weekends ago and had a ball, have a look http://forum.ozvmx.com/index.php?topic=35223.90 (http://forum.ozvmx.com/index.php?topic=35223.90)

Cheers
