I need a new air filter, so I was toying with ideas [pods verse whatever]
I came up with,,,,,,,1 take and throw the bottom of the air box [just onto the shelf]
2 slip down to Spotlight , grab some thick foam
3 cut into the old bird cage.
cut the foam & bird cage wire to the shape of the air box,,,,, one layer of wire between the box & foam , the other on top of the foam holding to the box. I used some light flat cut & drilled, to pick up the bolt holes, oil the foam there you have it Bobs your Uncle.
2 things I have found since the idea, the bike runs a tad lean so have lifted the needle slides 1 groove to stop the popping under decel, & have since added some gasket paper to the sides of the box , not sure whether to decrease the size of the intake or to interrupt air movement around the underneath, all extremely scientific NOT, like every thing just have a lash & see what happens------- well it happens alright, very well in fact....total cost $ 3.00 max

Photos please.............

Sounds better than what I found in mine..... couple of small (finger nail Size) bits of oil filled foam and a wire frame...... does wonders for the motor. Plus someone had drilled the bottom of the filter box for more air then taped it up.

we have a small technical hitch with the camera at the moment,,,it's 352klm away.
will try something on the w/end with the phone.

I am thinking of changing the way the air filter works as well.
Also found the empty cage effect so the foam shot out the exhaust at some stage.
Maybe back to the original paper element filters is a better idea???
I was thinking abot putting the filter up were the elephant trunk is any thoughts on that? or would it be too restrictive.
-
not sure why you guys are mucking about with it but I have seen a aluminium box feeding the carbs with a single largre pod filter external (like the pods used on commodores and turbo car engines)
-
Be interesting to see if that alloy box restrics flow
-
my self,,, started out of necessity, my filter had gone by the way side.
my first one died so I made one from thin foam inside the original wire cage, but wasn't real successful. :'(
Christian,, putting the filter in the air duct would be way constrictive,, as for a plenium chamber, those things need to be designed with some form of science behind them to work effectively, I've been told
-
the alum box was prob the same volume as the exist. air filter box .......
with the 4 venturi feeding the carbs

Says Session Timed Out ???
-
Yeh! says timed out?
This all seems like a lot of work (very inventive but) and possibly damaging to the heart of the machine for for a few bucks for a new filter.
My K+N filter is still as new after about 40K klm and is only, from memory, I think about the fourth or fifth one in 320,000klm. I'm a firm believer in don't screw with what works well.

sorry for the stuff up. new at this computer thing
as for damage to the motor, with the compressed, oiled foam the motor is still working for its air, if you look at the size of the hole in the paper it purposely not much bigger than the original filter. I wasn't sure when I did it that it would work, but having given it some 8 weeks it works very well.

ahhhhh .............now I know what u r talking about
