Woo Hoo, the restoration begins. Dropped the frame and some other bits off at the Glass Bead Blasting shop today, and will be picking them up on Tuesday next week. Then it's off to the painters for a fresh coat of "Blue/Black 2PAC". Its all starting to take shape and should look OK when it hits the road again some time later this year. I have included some pic's of the progress so far. 1st pic is when I purchased it from a guy in Albury NSW on March 13, 2ND and 3rd pics are mid strip down taken on March 20, and 4Th pic is ready to be blasted on Sunday March 21st. I have been waiting for the young bloke's mate to come good on his offer to blast and paint the frame since March 28, I couldn't wait any longer as the youth of today has no urgency about them at all. So I sourced a local "Glass Bead Blaster" and a well known paintshop in the local area. Will post more pic's as it happens, if anyone wants to see.

just a tip,,,,,,,,wish some one had told me
buy your self a couple of taps, to clean out EVERY threaded hole on the frame of paint and glass,,,
before the re-assembling stage
will stop the bolts/studs binding up then shearing off,,,, creating a heap of other probs
will also help with the bolts used for earthing

Looks like it was in pretty good nick when you brought it. Good buy
-
good buying mate and looking forward to following the remake. ;D
when you get the frame back check that the RTA can read the VIN and ID Plate on the neck. ::)
Once, when I had mine powder coated I didn't check it and when I got to the rego point they made me cut away the coating with a pocket knife, even though you could read it if you really tried. >:(
>:(PRICKS >:(

Hey thanks for the tip guys, will take on board all your comments. and I already spoke to the Blaster guy and he assured me he would be gentle around the frame number. As a precaution I have removed the compliance plate prior to giving it to him. I am a little worried about the paint, as I thought it may fill the numbers and I don't need any extra hassles from the RTA. It will be hard enough handing over all that cash just so it will be leagal, I think it's unadulterated robbery on the governments behalf. But no other choices so have to learn to live with it eh.
-
Come the revolution mate we'll get it sorted eh
-
Powder coating is not as repairable as paint.
-
The problem with powder coating is when it cracks the moisture gets underneath and instead of a tiny stone chip, you end up with a large piece of coating coming loose. >:(
-
I agree about the powder coating - I regret pc'ing mine....
it has discoloured here and there and is impossible to touch up...
2 pac is a much better option

Well this is how the frame turned out after the Blaster guy waved his magic wand, I am very happy with it as 99.9% of the past has been blasted away. I have already dropped it at the "Painters" and should pick it up early next week, so all on track thus far. ;D

Paint is only there to prevent rust but it does have to look good

Cheering, picked the frame and box of parts up from the paintshop on Monday 10TH, they had it for a total of 12 days. Talk about getting the run around, each day they would come up with an excuse as to why it wasn't ready on the agreed day, which was always "Tomorrow". But once they got wind of me finding another paintshop, they had it painted the very next day. Certainly can't complain about their ability to do an awesome job though, as I am very impressed with the finished product. I have included a "before and After" shot of the frame and it justifies the $300 they charged. So all up with Glass Bead Blasting $550 not too bad at all. :D

Oh yeah and a big thanks goes to Steptoe for the heads up on the threads, went and bought a tap set today and have cleaned them out. Heaps better than snapping bolts and struggling to tighten them. ;D
-
Really nice.
Thanks for sharing the pics.
What sort of cost was involved if you don't mind me asking?
-
Hey melbxs, all up to get the frame, swing arm, both stands, instrument casings, battery cradle, both triple trees,2 front calliper brackets, 1 rear caliper bracket, horn bracket, rear guard bracket and rear brake housing piece blasted and painted in 2Pak Black was a total of $550. I recon it was certainly worth it, as although it looked OK when I bought it, after stripping it down, the blemishes stood out and couldn't be ignored.
-
Had to take a quick trip back to the blaster guy today, as when it was painted (by a 3rd party), they filled up the frame number with "High Fill" before giving it the final coats of 2Pak. So a little masking off with some tape, and hey presto, the number is there for all to see :D He then put a couple of coats of clear over the number and I wasn't charged for the work. So I would definitely recommend "Advanced Soda Blasting" of Blacktown in Sydney for anyone wishing to get their frames blasted. A couple of pics included. :)

Beautiful job there, I'll be off to see him with my stuff.
Now to find someone who does BLACK CHROME
-
that looks really sweet,
and for what you paid for it, even better.
one day i hope to get mine done,
good to know that the guys are only around the corner from me,
who did the painting for you?

Looks great. I agree that the money you spent was well worth it.

Hey Pete, I got "Sarina's Prestige Paintshop" of Mount Druitt to do the painting. They have done a few jobs for me over the years, so I fully trusted them. Unfortunately though, they did stuff me around a bit on this one, it took 12 days for them to complete and that was after they said I would probably be picking it up 2 days after dropping it off. So a little frustrating, but as you can see, its a fantastic job. Would I use them again??? Yes, but I wouldn't be expecting to pick anything up in a couple of days.

Hey Christian, you might want to ask the blaster guy (Jason) if he knows of a shop that does "Black Chrome". He seems to have quite a few contacts around the place. His number is 0400 448 987. Top guy to deal with.

Well it's finally starting to look like a motorcycle again be-it very basic, now the exciting part begins. Today I installed the new steering head bearings and the triple tree's.Will be looking at sending the fork stems off to be re-chromed as they are showing signs of rust and pitting, only put them in the triple tree to align before clamping the top tree down. Gee I hope I remember how it all goes back together ;D
