Title: pilot mixture screw
Post by: wiz on November 12, 2011, 08:52:33 AM
Can anybody help me out with a pilot screw, I have one with the tip broken.
I did post earlier about how many turns out on the PMS was default, as my book said 'pre-set' a member replied 2 1/2, I just saw at the front of the book, "pre-set, in brackets 1 1/4 turns out"
now I'm screwed, forgive the pun.
Also the carbs are fitted with 132.5 mains, my book says 137.5, which is correct ?
Then again the book says the carbs are Mikuni BS34 & the throat on my carbs measures 35mm, any ideas.
Thanks, Wiz.

ay wizz,
as far a broken tip, nothing to do but replace it,  is the broken piece of the tip siezed in the carb body or is it out, that,s going to be the sticky bit, a fine piece of high tensile wire ground to point with a 90 bend might push it out after a good dowsing of penetrene or such

with the turns out, I start with 2 1/2 out @ 1000 rpm and work from there, easiest way is get it to operating temp then wind them in till the motor starts to slow, then out till it starts to run faster, turn the idle down to 1k again and repeat with the other 3, might have to do a couple of times but you get the idea

whatever you've got for jets, run with them if you don't have the money for another set, you can compensate them with other adjustments in the carbs, ie needle slide heights

Yeh it has to be replaced, just wondered if anyone had one before I go to the Yammery.

Steptoe, you were right about getting the tip out, I ground a hard nail to a needle point & put a bend on it, broke the brass tip off flush & tapped it out. Still looking for a replacement screw. ;O(

PM me your address and I'll post a pilot screw  up to you.

The main jet sizes changed quite a bit between models and some US models had jets as small as 110's.

Nice try, Fred, but the one you sent doesn't have a tip either, it's the one on the right, my original is in the middle. wiz, u might need to jump on ebay,
look for a fellar by the name of georgefix,
itll probably be cheaper to buy kits than buying
the mixture screws seperately,
i dont think yamaha has any left as a guy i know
apparently bought the last 4 in aus, that was a cpl of years
ago now and they werent cheap.

What the #@!*&

That screw had a tip on it when I sent it mate. As you know I even wrapped it in cotton wool and zip bagged it.
I only have one more left and I'll need to keep it for a spare myself.

Just for interest, check inside the cotton wool. If the tip is there then I'll make a claim with Aust Post for damages. If it isn't then its on your garage floor and I don't know why.

Fred, I opened it on the desk in the study, I have just dissected the cotton wool & the tip IS there, anyone ever soldered on back on ?

Well, I soldered the tip back on, instead of bottoming the screw & tuning out 2 1/2 turns, I'll measure how far out the next one is & use that as a default, that way there will be no strain on the tip, fingers xed.(https://xs1100.com.au/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi658.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu307%2Froyluck%2F1981%2520XS%25201100%2FPILOTREPAIR004.jpg&hash=b6ad62bd069882ecb67b9358c04d6127f0da31ba)

wiz,

Nice job mate. It might just be the piccy but that tip doesn't look like it on straight and wil therefore score the barrel or eventually snap off too.

Just the shadow me thinks, it's so small if it was off centre it wouldn't be on at all.
