G,day wiz.
what model/year is your bike? Just noticed your tacho has X1000rpm written on it. In "general discussion"  section topic "know your product" I was trying to find out what that style of tacho was off. And I see your speedo is imperial and metric.....got any history on that? I have one the same but know very little about it.

Cute shape though, Peter, I'm getting the cases chromed.
Jonesy, it's an 81 standard (H), it would be good to have some history, but I don't. ;o(

Seat pan has a bit of metal worm & the cover tabs were gone, so I drilled what solid metal was there & inserted some brass tacks, held them in place with masking tape, then used GRP tape & resin, on the inside.(https://xs1100.com.au/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi658.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu307%2Froyluck%2F1981%2520XS%25201100%2FXS1100SEATPAN002.jpg&hash=c7f6561fbb8b5ff7d39fa60b6234b3e8f3496fb6)(https://xs1100.com.au/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi658.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu307%2Froyluck%2F1981%2520XS%25201100%2FXS1100SEATPAN004.jpg&hash=d95c75ebe96e2cb33406345e97f03f520bfa3721)

Mate,

while you've got the drive line apart, could you do me a favour and grab the drive shaft at the front and while it is still connected to the diff turn it gently left and right and let me know how much free play there is from extreme left to extreme right  before it engages and starts to turn the diff.

I ask as there are no specs and I have a fair bit of lash and this I think loosened the torqued, self locking nut on the middle gearcase and consequently blew out the oil seal for the second time.

I'm hoping that there should be a fair bit of lash allowable for the cush drive and not warrant a driveline rebuild after a mere 337,000klm. I did a full middle gearcase rebuild two years ago but the rest of the driveline was OK at that stage.

Post by: wiz on November 08, 2011, 06:55:19 AM
Fred, after those klms you would be justified in jacking up the mirrors & driving a new bike under there.
I will measure the lash this morning. Wiz.

Fred, no discernible movement, maybe 1 mm.

Post by: wiz on November 08, 2011, 01:36:29 PM
Fred, I just checked my CD manual & it gives the final gear lash as 0.25~0.50mm (0.010~0.020in)

hey wiz,
the speedo/tach cluster sits at the bottom
of the top tripple tree,
it might not matter, but it could cause the speedo
cable not to reach,   jat.

youll be finished before u know it.   :D

It must be the logical way to put them on top because probably the majority of XS's have them that way, but the correct way is definitely underneath.

Bloody Aussie Post doesn't like to consider anyone's pre booked plans when rostering holidays, but I won't be giving up in a hurry so don't count me out just yet.

Is your seat cover original? The reason I ask is that I've been looking everywhere to find a replacement cover in the original style, without any luck so far though.

Hey Edgey,

If you look on ebay.co.uk they have seat covers for the standard.  I paid around AUD$100 including postage.  They are easy to fit if your seat foam is not too badly damaged and they look brand new.

Cheers

Very neat wiz,
Just wondering is that an older triumph inspired paint scheme? particularly the detail on the tank.
Hope to see it and yourself at brewarrina or bourke or dubbo or wherever the get together ends up being ;)

I don't know the provenance of the pipes, did you pick up on the crossed oil hoses ?
Yeh, that colour scheme is a throwback from my past.

Hey Edgey,

If you look on ebay.co.uk they have seat covers for the standard.  I paid around AUD$100 including postage.  They are easy to fit if your seat foam is not too badly damaged and they look brand new.

Cheers

Eddy

Thanks for the tip Eddy - just found the seat covers on the UK Ebay site and am about to buy one.  Gotta love the internet!

The crossed hoses mate?

Is that to make the headers fit with the oil cooler in place?
If that's so, was it a striaght fit? I ask as I'm interested in a Mac4 system with turnouts but they don't make them to fit models fitted with oil coolers.

Nice job on the bike by the way.

Hi Eddy,

Do the UK seat covers fit the Aussie '80 standards okay?  I had a look and noticed that the pattern's slightly different to mine, so wasn't sure.  (It's the same burnt in checkerboard style but mine has a few more 'squares' - might just be different spacing with larger squares on the replacement ones?)

I sent a question to the ebay seller in the UK but he wasn't sure.

Cheers,

Edgey

Bump.

Regarding seat covers, I bought a resto cover from Eldorado in Sth Aust recently, for my RD.  Very happy with it.
Their website wont confirm if they've got one for the XS, as it doesn't list anything.  But this'd be it anyway.
