G'Day,need some advice pls:my xs 1100 RH sport has done about 104,000ks-it runs a bit rough despite draining the carby bowls a few times[#2 plug indicates a slightly lean mix in that pot];advice seems to b to get the carbs cleaned and c if the 8 rubbers[expensive i have heard]need replacing.Would the cam chain need replacing?I havent touched the carbs in the 30,000+ks i have done in the last few years[and have adjusted the cam chain]thanx,and thanx for all yr past help.Ps it aint broke,and runs good enough for little ol me,so will i leave it all alone?Or would investing $s in the old girl be money well spent?PPs advice also seems 2 b 2 check out the valve adjustment

Hi Scotty,have you synched the carbys and set the mixtures with a colortune kit ? Have the shims for inlet and exhaust been checked/adjusted? How old and in what condition are the spark plugs and are they the BP6ES?

PM if you want a hand or just a loan of the tools to get you tuned up.
got shimming tool, feeler guages,, vac/synchro guages, colour tune and timing light.

dear Jeff and Jonesy,Thanx 4 ur reply and help-thanx 4 the offer Jonesy-I have the old girl booked in 2 get the valves' clearances adjusted and the cam chain checked out-she's running pretty sweet but i aint checked the clearances in the 40k i have done-i am not going to touch the carby side of things now as i figure[with the help of good people in my corner]that the valves are the most important thing-hopefully all will check out ok.I havent been adding valve fluid to the petrol[any comments?]

i will get the mechanic to tune the carbs[this mechanical stuff intimidates me-its taken me 7 months to replace a blown head gasget on my 85 323 mazda-and i still havent finished-i'm like a rabbit frozen in the spot light-but i'm close to reignition]Thanx again blokes.Yes Jeff BP 6 es plugs[new]

All seems good blokes-the mechanic shimmed the valves[2 and 3 inlet were tight,wotever that means]and said the cam chain will be good until the valve clearances r checked again in 40,000k.He also tuned the carbs which he said were way out.He also found my high beam.Touching wood,i have never owned a better machine[apart from my Stihl 44 Magnum bought new in the 90's.The RH runs and starts as well as when it came into my posession over 3 yrs and 40000 ks ago.I am inclined to believe that it is in fact the best bike ever built.Thanx again 4 yr continuing help.Watch out for the idiots,uninformed,uniformed and sundry potential life takers and maimers;and pay attention

G,day,should i get the tank cleaned and coated,the air cleaner box cleaned and the carbs pulled out and apart and cleaned?The bike runs and starts well,but there is a little bit of hesitation and slightly rough running[which i can live with.]I have it on good authority that parts can be very expensive[eg the constant velocity rubber diagphrams]thanx

g'day scotty,
I recently bought new diaphram rubbers from the states and fitted them myself (never done this before, didn't know you could change the rubbers), tried to buy a set of slides with diaphrams from show & go in Adelaide, he said they were for an '80-'81 but the slides didn't fit.
I think the diaphram rubbers were $150 shipped but you can probably get them cheaper if you wait for auction, it was still cheaper than slides with rubbers at about $380 a set, but don't ask yamaha for the price!
If you can't find them on ebay let us know and I can find and post a link.

Scotty, i would urge you to take Jonesy up on his offer of help. I have been lucky enough to meet other owners in Melbourne and we have all seen benefits on the bikes and it hasnt cost a penny. These bikes need a bit of tinkering, but a lot can be done with the tools that Jonesy has at his disposal.
Jonesy will quicly tell you if thee diAphragms are goosed, but i think it's quite rare for them to be dud.
Hook up with other owners. Thats why Christian started the site.

exactly my point,, over and over again,,, SCREW THE MECHANICS,, they don't seem to understand, and they don't care enough,,
if the carbs need pulling down and cleaning after going to the MECNHANIC you've wasted your money cause you,ve got redo what has just been done,
Scotty,,,,,take Jonesy up his offer, you'll get the job done by a bloke that does give a rats arse how it runs, and you'll be there watching how and why and learning how these old girls tick

I aint criticising the mechanic who recently did the valves[he does care,has owned an xs,and goes above and beyond,the call of duty]
But,like us all,i have had some bad experiences over the years[but not with my xs]

.....and i only instucted him to do the valves :).....he is a top bloke,and is methodical and sober in his approach to his work-a salt of the earth type
