Title: fuel taps
Post by: coe1948 on July 22, 2011, 09:55:14 PM
I had a few problems caused by the vaccum operated fuel taps so i bought some manual fuel taps Mike's XS650 parts ,i used 2 1978 taps that were listed for a 650 and they are a perfect fit as i expected.I would recomend this conversion to all XS1100 owners

   Regards Dale

Trying to find my thread on fuel taps...found this one here.  Mine must be somewhere else ::)

I've just fitted the non-vacuum taps from Mike's XS  - part no. 20-0019 -

I got 2 petcocks, that come with the O-ring, filter sleeves for the fuel pick ups, a brass looking filter inside the petcock, 1 straight take off & 2 elbow take off fittings and 1 take off plug.

I also bought some spare filter sleeves & 4 vacuum spigot covers.  The spigot covers look almost genuine, so you could get away with 2.

Cost was AU$147.10, delivered. (remember I got a few extra bits).
Ordered on 19th & delivered on 27th February.

You can see that I used 2 elbow fittings. The one on the right side fitted in so that the take off was vertical.  I had to play around with the one on the left side and couldn't get one to tighten up in the vertical position.

Mike's XS v OEM.  Fuel depth will be different.  I expect I will get longer range from the main and less from the reserve.  Empty will also have a higher fuel level than oem.

'Off' on the left tap is forward.  The take offs can be fitted either side.  The brass bolt is the block off.

The cap on No2 inlet is the Mike's XS part.  I need to find 2 more retaining clamps. I always seem to have plenty of the wrong size!

Right side, 'off' is in the normal rear position.

They look good.  Very obviously not oem but that's ok.  The finish isn't up to oem standards, the casting isn't as good.  But they work smoothly.   They have a little bleed screw, at 7 o'clock on the face.  For some reason, when I fitted them there was no fuel flow.  Yes, I had half filled the tank and tried both on and reserve on both taps.  I'm a dope, but not that much of one :-\
I pulled the bleed screws to check that the taps were working with a positive result.
I pulled the fuel line of one tap and fuel flowed onto the gearbox, as anticipated.  Connected it back up and fuel flowed through my in-line filter.
Stuffed if I know why. ::)

Anyway, it started and idled for a bit.  Responded to the throttle etc.  I've not ridden it, as other issues were pressing.  maybe tomorrow.

So, fingers crossed - no more leaking petcocks and worrying about fuel pushing past the needle & seat into the combustion chanber and/or crank case.

If I intend to park it for an extended period, I can even drain the float bowls.

Now that that is taken care of I can find some time to look at the carbs and see if I can get it to run properly on the idle circuit.

Good write up Ray,
Dale do you have any pics of your set up to help me decide which way I'll go?

I did 100 miles with the missus on the back yesterday.  Went fine, no issues of fuel flow at all.

Now, if I could just remember that I put manual taps on there for a reason. TURN THE BLOODY THINGS OFF!

I may need to write a reminder somewhere around the instruments.

Hey Ray, you could always fit an octy valve to do the job for you. I refitted my bike with one about 2 years ago and haven't looked back

What's an octy valve?

How do I get it inside my brain?

Or do I fit it on the outside of my head, like 'Seven of Nine'  :P
