Title: Squeaky Brakes

Before I start looking have any of you had noisy/squeak type noise coming from your front brakes. Mines doing it under medium braking effort at out of town speeds. Around town its fine.
Glazed up brake pads maybe?

any other suggestions?

If the piston is tight on the seal.............ie.... won t move freely in and out of the caliper.......it wont allow the pad to seat evenly down to follow the disc face...causing partial disc contact ........producing the squeal....rather than the whole disc pad surface.Also some sintered disc pads are more prone to wearing your disc faster and producing more noise.

read your post and PM and confirms what I was thinking. Probably explains braking effectiveness being pretty woeful too. Even though my other bike is about 80Kgs lighter and half the age of the XS the contrast in brakes Is more than expected.....looks like another day in the shed

Where did you sourc all the new seals etc? on line or the local yammie dealer?

Question to all.
what type/brand  of pads are you using or reccomend. My discs have very little wear/ridges/grooves etc and would like to keep em that way I've heard some pad materials are likely to accelerate this type of wear.

Had the wheel off to get new tyre and noticed this wear on the caliper holder. Might be related to to the noise under brakes, Shall reassemble carefully and see if I can suss out whats causing it

Looks like the pinch clamp on the axle wasn't done up with the slider in the right position. Also just before you go putting them back together, check the bolt that the caliper slides on. It may be stuck and somehow pushing the carrier out of alignment

When I was pulling apart I noticed that when i undid the axle clamp bolts the forks spread apart a bit. sorta like a PO might have done the clamps up before tightening the axle nut and pulling the fork together and maybe reducing the clearance between caliper holder and disc?
Just put itall back together doing the axle clamp up last and looks like plenty of clearance now.soon as the rain stops I'll take her for a test run

Yep. That'd cause the problem all right.

No more rain, test run done and no more noisy brakes....another niggly annoyance gone
