to Steptoe
well. a big F for miserable fail.
bugger
so I took the bowl off again, ran a ciggy lighter around the float (after I removed it ) to check for any pinholes. Nought.
scratch the head. sucking and blowing into the fuel delivery hose there was a sound of escaping air even when I was pressing down on the float needle WTF? where's that coming from? went to remove the needle seat assembly and it was completely loose. Big F for the useless mechanic too ::)
fixed it all back together again and redid the bench test an 1hour later all ok, but i'm gunna let it sit o/night again.

To Brett
I know you've been busy mate but if you get the chance to pull a needle and seat out and bring to bourke would be good just in case.

Hey Jonesy, I have been run ragged the last week but wanted to remind you that I have a set of carbies here from Bryan that could have some parts or take some of your parts to become a new set if needed?
Good luck chat soon.

pulled the carbys out and swapped the float valve needle and seat from No:4 to maybe? stop the leak, got side tracked a bit and made version 2 of the float pin removal tool

sorry in advance....dunno why the 2nd image is so big?

and then set up a bench test to sit overnight to see if the replacement needle and seat will leak.....ya cant see it but the funnel is also full of fuel to hopefully simulate a tank of fuel head pressure

seat off
disconnect LH fuel hoses and out the fuel poured as though on prime.
Did the fuel tap off position mod and it worked perfect.....no more fuel flow unless any one of the 3 existing fuel tap positions are selected
Steptoe old mate the mod is super simple and I should've done it before
simply remove the little chrome plate with on, res & pri on it and up the top next to "FUEL" is a little lug that stops you turning the tap past the res or pri position. file or dremmel the little lug away and now you have an off position.
Mind you can only turn the tap to about the ten to 12  position before it touches the tank but that's enough to cut the fuel flow
next to dump the oil and see why number 4 carby is flooding.
Not sure why every one seems to hit their tank and mine just clears it, but it does and will go to the 12 oclock position. You could grind or file a bit off the end of the petcock handle to get it to go completely to the 12  position. I use that mod on my bike as insurance when it is parked for longer times. We have long winters and I have too many bikes so sometimes they get parked for a while. Just one more way to stop fuel from getting into the engine helps me sleep at night  ;D
78E, 79SF currently running and road ready.
1 more in the wings patiently waiting with a big bore kit already installed.

Your coming wether the bike likes it or not,, :) :o,,

one of the  things we ( Ev and I ) did on the family saloon was carbs , hers had a 3 small creases in the floats and was  sinking, we couldn't, t see where the hole was so jammed some compressed air around it,, soon found out  where the hole was,

The other thing,, not sure what the off mod is,,,,, but it might pay if your going to take the tap apart anyway  is do

" the  old reface the surfaces of the tap with 12 or 2400 grit on a sheet of glass trick",,,  one of  Makzy, s ideas

Will take any tiny imperfections out and may solve the odd issue

Gotta love these old bikes but they can give you the s@#ts too. Opened the shed this arvo to a strong smell of fuel fumes and a closer look showed 581 bleeding fuel again!!
This time into the motor.
There was a tell tale drip mark on the motor casing directly below number 4 carby inlet manifold.
So I'm gunna drop the oil, do the fuel tap off position mod and check I haven't got another pinholed Float.
Odd thing was it sat for 3 days after its last run to Parkes before it decided to start leaking?

Still got the 594 backstop so its all good, sort of
