The carbys are back together with replacement brass floats  ( A BIG thanks to Eddy) and have passed the bench test. filled the bowls via funnel on the fuel supply lines and no overflowing. Next onto the bike with tank just above reserve and run till up to temp switched off and left overnight with no pool of fuel underneath. Tick.
Hopefully the on road test will get a tick and I can finally start clocking up some kays on 581

Hey Guys,

I always use Bakers as well, including the paste if need be.

I do find that it messes with the ahering ability of silve solder on brass and copper unless you preheat the metal.

Never tried it with silver solder, just the usual 40/60 and 60/40 sticks of the soft stuff.

Hey Ev is that for silver or soft solder or both?
I had a go with flux cored but failed
I took Eddy up on his offer.

This stuff, mate.

I use in on anything I have to solder together. Wiring, radiators, leadlights etc. It's a very handy item to have on hand. Much better than using flux core solder.

Pinhole?? They're they the original brass floats, aren't they? Try heating it (gently) to boil off any fuel trapped inside it, brush the area involved with some Bakers fluid, then a dab with a soldering iron. Maybe a heat sink of sorts to ensure that the soldered joint to the pivot arm doesn't undo in the process.
Be worth a try.

After many litres of fuel on the ground, tank removals and replacements, and general head scratching it turns out I have pin holed float in No: 4 carby. its so small you can even see it when you know where it is, just for fun i put a lighter up to it and a jet of flame comes out of it. When immersed in a container of petrol it lets out a tiny air bubble about very 30seconds. You can shake the float and cant feel or hear the fuel in it so it musnt take much for these floats to lose there boyancy and stop working.
At least now I know what the problem is.......now to find another one

yep, did that. right tap seems to be ok........only a slight drip, but the left tap flows freely in any position, just for fun I blew back on the vac line and the stream quickened. shall srip it and see what I can find.......

Take the tank off....and attach a tube to the vac nipple on each petcock ....testing the 3 positions allow fuel to flow as they should ....and cut out when suction is released. Obviously prime does nt need vac.

Jeff,
The taps were in the on pos, but flowing as though they were on prime, regardless, the float valves shouldnt have let the overflow happen

Thanks Scarfey
Theres been a bit of a development since I put that post up
Went back out to the shed and started it up thinking I'll up the idle adjustment and see what that does......after a couple of stalls and re-starts eventually it wouldnt start at all, and then the flood gates opened, literally, there was fuel absolutely pissing out of the airbox so I had to whip around and get the seat and tank off before it dumped the half a tank of juice on the ground
4 new float valves and seats >:(
2 new fuel tap kits  >:(
back to the drawing board/bike lift/workbench but it'll have to wait, much weed spraying to do first.
